Pneumonia is most often caused by bacteria or viruses though fungi and parasites can also play a role. Receiving the pneumonia shot—along with your annual flu vaccine—may help lower the risk of infection for adults and seniors.

According to the CDC, children under 5 and adults 50 and older are generally recommended to receive the pneumonia shot. Adults aged 19–49 with certain chronic conditions such as asthma may also be eligible. A pharmacist can help determine whether the vaccine is appropriate for your needs.

 


No. The pneumonia shot does not contain live bacteria. It uses inactivated components to help the immune system recognize and respond to the bacteria if exposed.
