Three Reasons to Celebrate National Women’s Health Month with Siggi’s

When we think about the month of October, the first thing that usually pops into our head is Halloween. However, another reason to celebrate October is because of National Women’s Health Month! This month we wanted to take the time to talk about a special food item that can provide great health benefits for women. What type of food is packed with nutrients, is a great source of protein and can be a creamy treat? If you guessed yogurt, you are CORRECT!

When you walk down the dairy aisle you notice so many types of yogurts that it can get a little overwhelming.  A great option to try is the Icelandic-style yogurt called Skyr. Skyr is a protein rich yogurt that is similar to Greek yogurt. The water naturally found in milk is strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier and concentrated yogurt. It takes four times the milk to make one cup of siggi’s compared to regular yogurt.  Siggi’s Dairy is an expert in creating Skyr yogurt that is made with simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar.

Here are three reasons yogurt is a benefit to women’s health:

Fill Yourself Up With Protein

Yogurt is a great source of protein. It is show to build muscle, improve metabolism and delay hunger.  Siggi’s flavored varieties have 13-16 grams of protein per serving.  It contains more protein than sugar in each cup.

Protect Against Osteoporosis

As women age, the risk of osteoporosis increases. Osteoporosis is a condition that causes by the weakening of the bones. Yogurt is rich in nutrients like calcium and phosphorus, that play an important role in women’s bone health. Adding yogurt regularly into your day can help preserve bone mass and strength.

Pack in the Probiotics

You have probably have heard the word “probiotics” before.  Probiotics are the good bacteria that are usually found in our digestive track. This “friendly bacteria” has been shown to reduce inflammation connected to several health conditions, improve the immune system and lessen uncomfortable digestive symptoms like bloating and constipation.

Butternut Squash and Leek Soup


1 cup leeks, rinsed and thinly sliced
1/2 cup shallots, sliced
2 Tbs garlic, sliced + 3 whole cloves
6 cups chicken or vegetable stock
10 cups butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1″ cubes
1 cup (5.3oz) siggi’s Pumpkin & Spice yogurt (any plain or vanilla siggi’s yogurt can also work)

Garnish, optional
1/2 cup butternut squash, diced
1/2 cup honeycrisp apple, diced
1 tsp thyme
chili flakes


In a large dutch oven, heat 4 Tbs of olive oil. Add leeks, shallots, squash, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and cook over medium heat until soft.

Add the chicken or vegetable stock. Simmer for about 20 minutes or until squash is fork tender.

In batches, puree the mixture in a blender until smooth. During the blending process, the mixture will be cool enough to fold in the yogurt. Careful not to add the yogurt while the soup is too hot. Season with salt and pepper.

Make the garnish. In a small saute pan over high heat, add 1 Tbs of olive oil and add the squash, apples and thyme. Allow the squash and apples to caramelize before topping each bowl of butternut squash and leek soup.
