Personalize Family Meals

Jewel Osco Registered Dietitians

Are you that household where everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to food?  Do you feel like a short order cook when dinner time rolls around?

If you can relate, consider these tips for making just one meal at dinner, tweaking it to meet the personal preferences of all family members.

  • Convenience items like Signature Cafe® by Jewel Roasted Turkey Breast are perfect for personalizing dinner. Round out the meal with a variety of salads and fresh cut fruits offered in our deli department and whole grain breads from our bakery, and go “picnic style” for dinner, with each family member building their own plate.
  • Leftovers of the turkey, which is already cooked, can be used for “build your own pizza” night when combined with whole grain, individual pizza crusts, a variety of vegetables, sauce, and cheese. Be sure to offer options that picky as well as health-conscious eaters will enjoy.
  • Plan meals that are designed for customization. For tacos and quesadillas, prep refried beans, cheese, and a variety of vegetables, including chopped Signature Cafe® by Jewel Roasted Turkey Breast as a protein.  Offer shredded lettuce as an alternative to taco shells or tortillas for the family member limiting carbohydrates.
  • Teenagers may choose vegetarianism for social reasons and young children may still be developing a palate for meat and poultry. Many family favorite meals can be made to please both those who seek animal proteins and those focused on plant-based meals.  For spaghetti night, offer a marinara sauce with turkey meatballs on the side.  Make half a lasagna with vegetables (think mushrooms, thin zucchini slices, onions) and half with meat or poultry. Cook JENNIE-O® Lean Ground Turkey as a meal time add-in to vegetarian soups, stews, and chili.

This month, Jewel Osco is partnering with Jennie-O Turkey Store, supplier of the Signature Cafe® by Jewel Roasted Turkey Breast, to bring families together more often at the dinner table because we believe the most important conversations of our lives happen here. These tips for creating meals that meet everyone’s preferences are a sure-fire way to gather family together and create memorable moments.
