Hamburgers, Buns and $1 Million Dollars

Jul 31st, 2014

When Yorkville resident Dan Hoffmann was planning his Fourth of July festivities his only concern was having enough food on hand for his backyard barbeque. Fortunately for Hoffmann, more party guests showed up than he anticipated, sending him on a last-minute-mission to Jewel-Osco for extra hamburgers and buns.

While shopping, Hoffmann deviated slightly at the Lotto kiosk to buy a lottery ticket. “I play Powerball once in a while and I always buy Quick Picks,” said Hoffmann.

Amidst the glow of skyrockets and the company of family and friends, Hoffmann forgot about his last-minute purchase. It would be several days before he remembered to check the winning numbers online.

“I was shocked! I couldn’t believe it. I don’t think I slept at all that night,” he noted. That incidental purchase turned out to be worth $1 million dollars.

The winning ticket was purchased at Jewel-Osco on 234 East Veterans Parkway in Yorkville.  On Sunday, Lottery officials presented Hoffmann with a ceremonial check for his $1 million prize.  The Yorkville Jewel-Osco received a ceremonial check for $10,000, which is 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.

Congratulations, Dan, and thank you for shopping at Jewel-Osco!
