While every day is a great day for celebrating popcorn, October is Popcorn Poppin’ Month because of the popcorn harvest which takes place each fall in the Midwest. Each year when the new crop is harvested, we are reminded that popcorn will always be a naturally fun snack for the entire family.

Popcorn Poppin’ Month is the perfect time to celebrate all things popcorn! It’s hard to believe a snack food that tastes so good can actually be good for you, but there’s no doubt that it is a perfectly sensible choice. Popcorn is a whole grain food, and we aim for half of our grains to be whole grains every day. It is also a high-quality carbohydrate source that is not only low in calories, but a good source of fiber.

Compared to many snack foods, popcorn may keep you feeling fuller longer and is low in calories. Air-popped popcorn provides only 30 calories per cup. When oil-popped, it contains only 55 calories. Even drizzled lightly with butter, it’s only 90 to 120 calories per cup. It’s easy to understand why there’s a month-long celebration for this American icon with popcorn’s irresistible aroma, connection to good times, budget-friendly price, and nutrition benefits. Join in the fun by making the popcorn recipes on the next page!
